How To Use Free Time Wisely When Unemployed

February 17, 2016

One of the most damaging things you can do to yourself while out of work is to think of this time as a vacation. When people begin to think they are on vacation they will be comfortable with their unemployed state and it becomes difficult to do the necessary tasks which will lead to a new job. Here are a few tips on how to use your time wisely while unemployed.

Get Ready To Work

Get up each morning as if you are still going to work. Get up, get dressed and get busy. If you stay in your pajamas and make no plans for the day you are sure to accomplish nothing. You are not on vacation, get ready to work.

Stay on a Schedule

Whatever your work schedule was before, stick to that schedule. Get up at the same time each morning and go to bed at the same time each night. If you worked 8 hours, continue to use those same 8 hours each day to devote to your job search or to skill development.

Develop Your Skills

Your new job is to develop skills which will help you land your next job. Skill development can include going back to school to earn your degree, getting certified in a particular field, or working on your job application package. All of these tasks require your full attention and time.

Protect Your Time

Make sure that others know you are not simply available to do their bidding, chores and errands just because you are out of work. It is very easy for others in the home to take advantage of your time. Protect your time so that you can get tasks accomplished which will help you land your next great job.
