How to Find a Job After Doing Jail Time

Finding a new job is hard enough, but throw in a few obstacles, such as an arrest record, and you can really start to get discouraged. The good news is that even those with a record of arrest and even jail time can still find a job and move on with their life. Here are a few things to keep in mind during your job search if you have and arrest record or have done jail time.

Search for Friendly Employers

There are many employers who are not ashamed of the fact that they hire people who have had trouble with the law. These employers are hoping to give individuals a second chance at a new life. They understand that the best way a person can get their life back on track, is by being given the opportunity to do things the right way. Do some research to find these type of employers in your area.

Be Honest

Your conviction or jail time will come up eventually, so go ahead and be totally honest and transparent. Your future employer will appreciate this. This will probably be your first step toward earning their trust. There may be some who will hold the past against you, but remember, they are not the only employers out there.

Learn Career Skills

During your job search use every opportunity you can to learn new job skills, career skills and job search skills. Now is the time to learn how to create a resume, how to conduct yourself during an interview and the basics of professional behavior in the workplace. If you have not previously learned these skills, take the time now to do so. There are many online resources that will help you learn everything you need to know about succeeding in the workplace.

An arrest can definitely be a setback in life, but it doesn't mean life can't go on. There is life after jail and a great new job awaiting you.
